Week 3 Earthquake

Week 3: Earthquake

As mentioned in week 2, Taiwan is one of the very seismically active countries. Taiwan is located on a complex tectonic plate and is a so-called earthquake-prone country, including small earthquakes, with an average of about 90 earthquakes per month, or three per day. 2,415 people were killed in the 921 earthquakes mentioned in week 1.

After the 921 earthquakes in 1999, the information infrastructure of buildings and structures is being organized and earthquake preparedness models are being developed. In addition, information on where and how big an earthquake is quickly available to local people via smartphones and the Internet. The 1666-foot Taipei 101 building has a wind damper, a giant gold sphere, hanging inside the building, which is said to play a role in reducing the width of the building by 40%.

What keeps Taipei 101 steady during earthquakes and typhoons?

  1. Great post! I had no idea prior to reading your blog that Taiwan is so prone to earthquakes. While many lives were still lost, we have learned that many multiple occurrences of a natural hazard, like the 90 per month Taiwan experiences are usually smaller in magnitude. Does that check in, in terms of the magnitude of the earthquakes that occur in Taiwan? The technology of the wind damper looks so unique! I wonder if this is a technology used in other parts of the world and if not, could it be helpful.

  2. Hello Shoki!
Thank you for this nice post, because I have had some interest in traveling to different Asian Countries. I just needed to know potential risk factors before doing so this definitely gave me important insight. Three earthquakes a day is pretty incredible. いいポスト

  3. Hey Shoki,
Thank you for your blog post it really builds upon your last one. When I compare your country to my own then I realize that yours is way more active. It's really interesting to read more on an active country, it really blew my mind when I read the fact that they average nearly 3 earthquakes a day.
